London (EFE).- The leader of the right-wing populist party Reform UK, Nigel Farage, proposed on Wednesday that the by-election for the English constituency of Clacton-on-Sea be held on Thursday, Aug. 6, after resigning from that seat to run for reelection and seek another term amid multiple scandals.

After stepping down from his seat as a member of Parliament on Wednesday following his resignation announcement on Tuesday, Farage confirmed that on Thursday, he will submit a formal request to parliamentary authorities.

If that date is not feasible due to electoral calendar requirements, the election will likely take place the following Thursday, Aug. 13.

The populist leader resigned from his seat on Tuesday and announced that he would run for reelection to allow “the people of Clacton” to decide at the polls on his performance, rather than letting “the establishment” do so, which he accuses of seeking to undermine him due to his party’s rise in the polls.

Farage emphasized that the contest in the coastal town will be “between the people and the establishment,” a term he uses to refer to parliamentary authorities, fellow politicians, and journalists investigating possible irregularities he or Reform UK may have committed.
