Hungary’s state television channel M1 has issued an apology to viewers, admitting that its news coverage had contained “lies” over several years. The announcement was made as public service media outlets undergo a major restructuring aimed at making them more independent and reliable.
The channel displayed a message on a black screen announcing the temporary suspension of news broadcasts.
“Public service media cannot lie. However, we apologize for doing so for many years,” the statement said.
M1 added that public media were currently being reorganized and asked viewers to remain tuned as the changes were implemented.
“Public service media are currently being renovated so that they can be independent and reliable in the future. News broadcasts have been temporarily suspended. Please stay with us!” the announcement read.
