The family of Nolan Xavier Wells continues searching for answers, after a body was found during a search for the missing 18-year-old in the water near an island following a Fourth of July trip with friends.While an investigation is ongoing, noted civil rights and personal injury lawyer Ben Crump said July 7 that he had been retained by the family, to try and get to the bottom of what happened.“Nolan Wells was a beloved son, teammate and friend who went out to celebrate the Fourth of July and never came home. His family deserves answers. They deserve the truth,” Crump said in a statement. “We will not rest until every fact about what happened to Nolan on Horn Island is brought into the light, and we call on investigators to pursue this case with the urgency and transparency this family deserves.”Here’s everything we know about the case so far.Grim discovery during search for Nolan WellsWells, 18, was last seen on the northwest tip of Horn Island the afternoon of July 4th, according to reporting from the Clarion Ledger, part of the USA TODAY Network. Horn Island is located about 10 miles off the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. According to the National Park Service, the island is only accessible via private boat and is a designated wilderness area, meaning it is untouched by commercial development.He had taken a trip to the island with several friends to celebrate the holiday. When he didn’t return to the mainland with the group, his mom reported him missing.The Jackson County Sheriff's Office led a land and water search July 5 and July 6. The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, National Park Service employees and the U.S. Coast Guard helped with the search, alongside the United Cajun Navy and other volunteers.The search was ultimately called off the morning of July 6, after a park ranger discovered a body in the waters near the island, per the Clarion Ledger’s report.Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd confirmed to the Sun Herald that the body matched Wells' description. However, he said the Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office has not yet identified the body through DNA testing.An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, July 7, according to Crump's office.Investigation continues as case is spotlighted on "Good Morning America"The case was featured on "Good Morning America" on July 7 where it was reported that investigators are looking into it as a possible drowning. An official cause of death has not yet been determined. Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter also appeared on the segment and made comments about the investigation. "They left and went back with Nolan from what we understand he chose to stay there." Ledbetter also says authorities are still seeking information from anyone who may know what happened.According to reporting from TMZ, the sheriff's office was investigating a video shared on social media that seems to show people arguing on Horn Island on the holiday. It's unclear if the footage, which shows a crowded beach, is related to the case.‘God took his time creating our son’Wells' mother, Christine Wonsley, posted on social media throughout the search, sharing information and asking for help. She has since asked that the family be given privacy to grieve in peace.In another Facebook post on July 6, she thanked the people who worked to find her son, adding that she's grateful for the community's prayers and support."His father, our family, friends and I are absolutely devastated,” Wonsley wrote. “My heart is broken for my sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others. Nolan was a special soul, God took his time creating our son.”Fake GoFundMe profiles try to capitalize on tragedyIn the wake of Wells’ death, several fake GoFundMe accounts that aren't linked to the family have popped up. Wonsley noted in a Facebook post that her friend Allayah Denis created the only authorized fundraising page.So far, the page has raised $197,000 of its $120,000 goal to help with funeral expenses and to support Wells' loved ones.The page describes Wells, who would’ve turned 19 next month, as a "beloved son, grandson, brother, friend and teammate whose life touched so many people. His smile, kind heart, and love for others left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him."‘An exemplary student, athlete, friend, and teammate’The Ocean Springs teen was an athlete who played several sports. He was on the football team at Southwest Mississippi Community College.On the evening of Monday, July 6, President Steven Bishop released a statement from the school."Nolan was an exemplary student, athlete, friend, and teammate. We remember Nolan as a well-respected young man who was very popular among friends, faculty, and staff. We loved Nolan, and he will be greatly missed in many ways," Bishop wrote.The investigation into Wells’ death is ongoing, according to Crump’s office.Celebrities react to Nolan Wells caseThe Nolan Wells case has even stirred a reaction out of some notable Hollywood personalities, such as "Watch What Happens Live!" host Andy Cohen and actor and singer Taye Diggs."RIP Nolan Wells. What a tragedy," Cohen said on Threads on July 7.Diggs posted to his official Facebook page on July 7, saying "RIP Nolan, let's hope this young man gets some justice.Tefi Pessoa, a popular social media personality and co-host of "Love Island" aftershow "Aftersun," also took to social media to express sadness over Wells' death."Rest in peace Nolan Xavier Wells.
