A couple and their terminally ill nine-year-old son who fell 400 feet from their luxury London high-rise tower block all died almost instantly of multiple injuries, it emerged today as an inquest opened.Rakesh Pai, 47, his wife Aditi Paralkar, 46, and their son Sid fell from the balcony of their 36th-floor apartment at Highpoint tower in Elephant and Castle on the morning of May 27.Details of their ‘tragic’ passing were heard today as their inquest was opened during a short hearing at London Inner South Coroner’s Court.The family were pronounced dead within 20 minutes of each other at the Uncle building, which has 45 floors, by air ambulance medics, the inquest was told.They were identified by police officers who visited the scene and who later compared the bodies with their passport photos, it was heard.In a statement, PC Jack Morgan said he performed CPR to the tragic child before he was pronounced dead at the scene.He said: ‘We were the first unit in attendance and were the first to access the roof area.‘My primary role was to administer CPR to Sid. Aditi Paralkar, 46, died along with her partner Rakesh Pai, 47, and their son Sid, nine, when they fell from their 36th-floor apartment The family fell from their flat, circled in red, at the 45-storey Highpoint tower block in Elephant and Castle, south London‘On 16 June, after reviewing passport photos I can state with confidence that it was the same person at the scene.’It was heard that Rakesh was pronounced dead at 7.43am, Aditi at 8.05am, and Sid one minute later.Detective Sergeant Simon Monga, based at Lewisham police station, arrived to survey the scene shortly after their fall from 400ft.He told the court: ‘Unfortunately the three people mentioned had died [when I arrived].‘They were recovered by the fire brigade and were in the process of being taken to the mortuary.‘They fell from height onto an adjoining building a few stories up.‘The post-mortem was inconclusive and we are waiting for the pathologist to come back.’He asked for more time to complete his investigation into the circumstances of the deaths. A view of the courtyard where the family of three fell 400ft to their deaths Another angle showing the 36th-floor apartment at the luxury London tower block circled in redAssistant coroner Michelle Haste said all had died from ‘multiple injuries’, but it would take around six months for the remaining tests, including toxicology reports, to be completed.Adjourning the hearing, she said: ‘There are reasons to believe these deaths were unnatural.’She read a short statement from suicide support charity Samaritans, which provides help and assistance, at the beginning of the hearing.Addressing a family member who was watching the case by video-link, she said: ‘May I offer you my sincere condolences for the very tragic loss of your loved ones.’The couple, originally from India, were both high-earning consultants and had no close family in the UK.Friends previously said Aditi, known as Adi, had been struggling with depression and severe stress linked to Sid’s complex health needs.Sid was unable to speak, partially handicapped and had learning difficulties and kidney disease, it is said.The child, born in Britain, was homeschooled, with Aditi taking on much of his care and education. The flats in Clapham that the family intended to convert back into a house for them to live inThe tragedy is believed to have unfolded after Sid was reportedly denied treatment and discharged from hospital, leaving his parents devastated.Friends said the family had moved to India around six years ago in search of specialist medical help for Sid and to give Aditi more support from relatives and friends in Mumbai.They are said to have returned to Britain last year after doctors in India were unable to improve his condition.The exact circumstances of the deaths will be determined at the inquest, with friends questioning the theory of a suicide pact.One friend said: ‘It was a huge stress for both of them but Adi in particular struggled to cope.‘She had no family in the UK and also had a very demanding job. It took a huge toll on her mental health.’Both parents were educated at leading universities in India before moving to London in the early 2000s.Rakesh worked as a project manager for major banks including Barclays, Santander and Deutsche Bank, while Aditi delivered construction projects, including cladding work at Heathrow.The couple had previously lived in nearby Clapham, South West London, and were planning to convert two flats there into a family home.They were staying temporarily at Highpoint, where two-bedroom apartments can cost up to £3,800 a month.Neighbours described them as ‘lovely’ and said they had grown attached to their Clapham community.The family were found dead in the courtyard of the tower block.Police, paramedics, firefighters and London’s Air Ambulance attended, but they could not be saved.Some residents and staff witnessed the fall and have been left traumatised, locals said.Others claimed they had heard shouting from the family’s apartment in the weeks before the deaths.Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, said the incident had left the community grieving and urged anyone struggling to seek help.The Metropolitan Police said the deaths are being treated as ‘unexpected’.A spokesman said: ‘Detectives are investigating after three people died following a fall from height on May 27.‘At 7.29am officers, the London Ambulance Service, London’s Air Ambulance and the London Fire Brigade attended a high-rise block of flats on Churchyard Row, Elephant and Castle, following reports that people had fallen from height.‘At the scene, three people – a man, a woman and a child – were found to have sadly died, despite resuscitation attempts by first responders.‘Their deaths are currently being treated as unexpected. There were no other reported injuries. Work is underway to formally identify those who died.‘Their next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.’
