Paying tributes to two-time Sahitya Akademi Award winner Puviyarasu, literary enthusiasts on Wednesday (July 8) described how the late poet, as founder of Vaanampadi Magazine, inspired many to tap into their creative instincts through free verse poetry.At a meeting organised by Tamil Nadu Kalai Illakkiya Perumandram to pay homage to the late poet, speakers recalled his rich contributions to Tamil literature as screenplay writer, artist, poet and translator of the works of Khalil Gibran, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Omar Khayyam and many other personalities.M. Velayudham, founder and director of Vijaya Pathippagam, described the late poet as a pragmatic literary personality symbolising simplicity.K. Shanthakumari, founder of Tamil Nadu Association of Women Lawyers, said Poet Puviarasu could well be considered the literary symbol of Coimbatore.As founder of Vaanampadi magazine, the late poet democratised poetry writing, Ms. Shanthakumari said, mooting an annual event in the late poet’s honour for recognising literary personalities with awards worth ₹1 lakh.Tamil Nadu Kalai Ilakkiya Perumandram General Secretary Aram thanked the government for honouring the poet with State funeral. The late poet remained devoted to Marxist thoughts all along, he said.Formerly head, department of Tamil, Nirmala College for Women, Coimbatore, Sr. Arutseeli; senior lawyer P.K. Rajagopal and the late poet’s daughter Puvi Bhagyalakshmi were among the speakers.Earlier, a documentary on the life of the late poet was screened.
