Marking six months since the bloody crackdown on the January nationwide protests in Iran, Amnesty International declared that, due to the complete absence of any domestic prospects for justice, pursuing the rights of victims and their families through international criminal justice avenues must be treated as an “urgent and non-negotiable priority.”
In a statement highlighting the killing of thousands of protesters during a two-day nationwide crackdown, the organization strongly criticized what it called the “unjustifiable inaction of the international community” regarding Iran’s human rights crisis.
“Six months after Iranian security forces unlawfully killed thousands of women, men, and children across the country over two days, the international community’s failure to take effective steps toward international justice is unjustifiable.”
Amnesty added that this inaction has fueled a continuous cycle of lethal repression in Iran, leaving survivors and victims’ families entirely deprived of justice.
Amnesty International issued a stark warning that diplomatic efforts to reach agreements between Iran and the United States must not lead to widespread human rights violations in Iran being ignored. According to the organization, authorities of the Islamic Republic have faced no consequences for deploying lethal force against protesters. This absolute impunity has emboldened them to repeat bloody crackdowns.
