District Collector Anand Mohan has urged the farmers to insure their crops to save themselves from anticipated adverse impact of El Nino on crop production this year.Addressing the mass contact programme held at Ramaiyanpatti near here on Wednesday, Mr. Anand Mohan said the El Nino Year, which would surface once in 50 or 100 years as per meteorological predctions, might have adverse impact on rainfall and consequent crop production this year. Since unexpected heavy downpour or prolonged dry season with extreme heat would badly affect the crop yield this year, the farmers should insure their crops under Prime Minister’s Kisan Crop Insurance Scheme to shield themselves from possible crop loss.“The prescribed insurance premium for each crop should be paid before the last date to avail the insurance benefits in case of crop loss,” Mr. Anand Mohan said. The Collector handed over welfare assistances, including revolving fund for self help groups, assistance for SHGs to start their business ventures, agriculture inputs and other assistances worth ₹60.41 lakh to 100 beneficiaries. He also gave away community certificates to three students from Kaattu Naicker community after prolonged verification done by the revenue officials. The Collector also inaugurated the foot and mouth vaccination camp in the village. In the mass contact programme organised at Pappankulam, Tenkasi District Collector Ranjeet Singh distributed welfare assistances and loans worth ₹1.79 crore to 67 persons. The Collector appealed to the villagers to ensure the higher education of their children, particularly the girls.“Since the higher educational qualifications obtained by the girl children alone can ensure their living standards and economic independence, the parents should make sure that their daughters obtain at least an undergraduate degree,” Mr. Ranjeet Singh appealed.
