The Portuguese Football Federation has officially confirmed the departure of national team head coach Roberto Martínez following the expiry of his contract.

According to Reuters, the Portuguese federation announced on Wednesday that it had formally ended its contractual relationship with Martinez and his coaching staff, two days after the Spaniard revealed he would step down following Portugal’s FIFA World Cup exit.

“The Portuguese Football Federation announces that it officially ended its contractual relationship with the National Team Coach, Roberto Martinez, and his coaching staff this Wednesday,” the federation said in a statement.

Martinez had disclosed after Portugal’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16 that he would leave the role, bringing his three-and-a-half-year spell in charge to an end.
