A 13-year-old boy, who suffered multiple life-threatening injuries after falling from the fifth floor of a building in Hyderabad, survived after 34 days of intensive and closely-monitored treatment by doctors and other healthcare professionals at a corporate hospital in the city. He suffered a tear in aorta (largest and main artery), femur bone fracture, injury to lungs, brain injury (bleeding), kidney failure, pancreatic trauma and other complications. The teen was initially taken to a nearby hospital in Nizampet and then shifted to Rainbow Hospitals where he was provided with the intensive care treatment. He was in a coma for over a week, secondary to brain injury. Although aortic stenting prevented a fatal rupture, the child remained critically ill. The severe brain injury demanded continuous neurological assessment, meticulous blood pressure management, repeated neuroimaging and advanced neuro-intensive care monitoring, informed a press note. His kidneys failed on the third day of the hospital admission, which necessitated Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), a form of continuous dialysis. This was discontinued after the renal function recovered following fluid management, electrolyte correction and advanced critical care. He received total parenteral nutrition (providing nutrition and calories needed intravenously) through an intravenous line until the pancreas stabilized. The teen was removed from ventilator support after the second week of hospital stay. His kidney function subsequently restored. The patient was discharged for rehabilitation after five weeks. At discharge, he was able to recognise everyone, communicate his needs and breathe comfortably. The team of doctors included Anupama Yerra, Koneti Nageswara Rao, Shaikh Farhan Rashid, Prashanth Bachina, Konaki Ramesh and Venkatram Talepalli. Published - July 08, 2026 06:52 pm IST
