Only three ambulances on duty for George area per shift — health MEC

Only three ambulances are on duty to cover emergencies across George and the wider region at any given time — day or night — despite the district officially having a fleet of 28, five of which are currently out of service for repairs.

Just three ambulances are rostered to respond to emergencies in George and its surrounding areas on any given day or night shift.

This emerged from a written parliamentary reply by Western Cape health and wellness MEC Mireille Wenger, following questions by MPL Brendon Adams about ambulance shortages in the Garden Route.

Wenger revealed the district has 28 ambulances, but five are in the workshop for mechanical repairs or servicing.

Staff shortages mean the department can only put 17 of them on the road per shift across the entire district.
