Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting doctors and medical staff at a civic-run hospital in Maharashtra's Thane district, two days after the incident triggered widespread outrage and drew strong protests from the medical fraternity.Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kalyan) Atul Zende said Mhatre had been taken into custody in connection with the criminal case registered against him and his aides at the Vishnunagar police station."Further investigation is underway," the officer said. The alleged assault took place on Monday evening at a civic hospital in Kalyan after doctors advised a family to shift a newborn to another medical facility.A video of the incident, purportedly showing Mhatre and his supporters assaulting two doctors and other hospital staff, went viral on social media, sparking public outrage.Police registered a case against Mhatre and five others on Tuesday night following mounting pressure from the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which had threatened to suspend medical services in the area if immediate action was not taken. As the controversy escalated, the Shiv Sena sought to distance itself from the incident.Thane Lok Sabha MP Naresh Mhaske, speaking from New Delhi, said the party had initiated internal disciplinary proceedings against the corporator and made it clear that it would not shield him from legal action."The party has not supported the incident that occurred, nor will it ever support it. The assault was indeed committed by Mhatre. Even though he is a senior leader who has been elected five to six times, the party will not condone this behaviour," Mhaske stated. He said the party leadership had issued a show-cause notice to Mhatre."The top leadership of the party will make the final decision regarding disciplinary action. Our disciplinary committee will decide on the exact course of action. Furthermore, the party will not interfere or hold back anywhere when it comes to legal action by the law enforcement agencies," Mhaske said, adding that the law must take its own course.
