The more Donald Trump talked at the Nato summit in Ankara on Wednesday morning, the harder it became for any American voter to find a rationale in his constantly shifting position on Iran.
Flanked by Nato secretary-general Mark Rutte, Trump went on a furious tear, declaring that the ceasefire with Iran that began on 8 April was now dead in the water, and adding for good measure that he considers the regime leaders in Tehran to be “scum”.
“I think it’s over,” he told reporters, hours after the two countries exchanged fresh strikes. “I don’t want to deal with them anymore. They’re scum… they’re sick people,” the US President insisted.

He then argued that mediators engaged in negotiations were “wasting their time” and slammed Iran’s leadership as “liars”.
