Jofra Archer is looking forward to the next tussle with teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, telling the India batter: “May the best man win.”At the age of just 15, Sooryavanshi is already well on the way to superstardom, walking away as the top run-scorer, top six-hitter and most valuable player at this year’s Indian Premier League. But England have managed to keep him in check across his first two T20 internationals, dismissing the youngster for 14 and 13 in victories at Old Trafford and Trent Bridge. There have been glimpses of his ball-striking power, with four sixes already under his belt including two in the six deliveries he has faced from Rajasthan Royals teammate Archer.Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has showcased his freakish six-hitting talent (Reuters)The pace bowler exacted revenge in Nottingham, bouncing Sooryavanshi out with a 91mph bumper that whistled past his ears and took a glove on the way through to the wicketkeeper.“It’s evens now,” Archer said. “We have two games left and it could go anywhere, so may the best man win.”The pair are set to go head to head again in Bristol on Thursday, when England can seal an impressive Vitality Series win against the world champions, and opener Phil Salt is cheering Archer on.Jofra Archer and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi are IPL teammates (AP)He grew up being tested by Archer during their childhood days together in Barbados and wants to see him crank up the hostility.“I hope so, yeah,” he said. “Jof is horrible to face and I know that because I’ve been doing it since I was about 11.“It’s nice to see someone else get the treatment for a change.”Salt laid the foundations for England’s crushing 125-run win on Tuesday night, playing out a maiden off Arshdeep Singh and battling through a sticky start to finish with 70 from 44 balls – only six runs fewer than the entire India team.It was a more nuanced knock than he is known for, but one that positioned his side well for an important victory.“Part of opening the batting in T20 cricket is getting off to a good start, putting them under pressure, and our start wasn’t exactly electric,” he said.England’s Phil Salt played maturely in the third T20I (PA Wire)“We didn’t fly out of the blocks. Sometimes it works and it’s easy, sometimes you have to fight a bit harder and find a different route into the game.“I wasn’t getting twitchy as such, you just try break it down as much as you can. A maiden is definitely foreign territory in T20 cricket, with the way game is going, but being on the slower side of things it’s valuable to have time to assess conditions and mitigate risk to the best of your ability.”India head coach Gautam Gambhir has now overseen defeats in four consecutive completed matches, starting with a 2-0 upset in Ireland, and must decide whether to recall Sanju Samson. He was named player of the tournament as India won the T20 World Cup on home soil earlier this year but has been axed to make way for Sooryavanshi.Fans were chanting for his recall at Trent Bridge and Gambhir did not rule it out.“What he has done for India during the World Cup has been phenomenal,” he said. “There is no hard and fast rule that he cannot make a comeback in this series.”PA
