Disbarred lawyer Peet Viljoen says he intends suing the National Prosecuting Authority for R500 million, alleging that he has been unlawfully prosecuted in a fraud and corruption case.
Disbarred lawyer Peet Viljoen has told the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria that he intends suing the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for R500 million, claiming he has been subjected to an unlawful prosecution.
Viljoen said if he intended to evade justice, he would have requested deportation to Mexico while detained in the United States because South Africa does not have an extradition treaty with that country.
Viljoen's lawyer read an affidavit in which the former attorney maintained that the State's case against him was weak and that he intended to challenge the allegations against him.
"The charges before this court stem from incidents dating back approximately 16 years, and throughout that period Mr Viljoen remained identifiable, traceable and available to the legal process," Viljoen's lawyer told the court.
