It is the question which is obsessing every England fan - and Thomas Tuchel. How on earth do you stop Erling Haaland? The Norway striker has scored seven goals in this tournament and his double knocked five-time winners Brazil out in the last round. Norway are the dark horses of this tournament and lay in wait for England in Saturday’s quarter final in Miami on Saturday.England fans are very familiar with Manchester City goal machine Haaland as he is the deadliest striker in the Premier League.Martin Odegaard has captained Arsenal to Premier League glory while there are other Premier League names to watch in Stale Solbakken. Sander Berge, Oscar Bobb and keeper Orjan Hyland - another hero of the Brazil win - is a free agent (but may not be for much longer) used to play for Reading, Norwich, Aston Villa and Bournemouth.Norway are 19th in the FIFA rankings - compared to England in fourth - but few expected them to beat Brazil in the last round. They are very dangerous opponents and England will be relying on their team of analysts, scouts and Tuchel together with his coaching staff to come up with another masterplan.England boss Tuchel has already seen off DR Congo and Mexico in the knockout while their second 45 minutes against Croatia showed their true potential. But they now face a new challenge in Norway thanks to Haaland, Odegaard and Co.Get the latest World Cup 2026 news in your inbox with our Make Football Great Again newsletterSo, who is best to ask how to beat them? A vastly experienced, highly-respected Premier League scout who has worked for the biggest clubs and also championed the signing of one of the most expensive players in football history.Mirror Football’s secret scout also compiles reports on opposition and we asked him for his expert analysis, views and special report on Norway’s dramatic win over Brazil. Our chief football writer, John Cross, asked him to provide his report - and it is a fascinating insight and inside track into the team England will face on Saturday.Norway scouting reportTale of the shapeNorway played 4-3-3 in possession. Flat back four. A holding midfield player. Sander Berge who would drop in to receive.Brazil never really pressed high so Berge was allowed to play balls out wide or though the lines. They played with two other midfielders players with Martin Odegaard the creative spark. The front three kept their shape. Two wide players and Haaland through the middle. They took both wide players (Alexander Sorloth and Antonio Nusa) off at half time and brought on Oscar Bobb (who plays on the right and is right-footed) and Andreas Schjelderup (left footed from the right) provided both assists. They quickly drop into their defensive shape which is 4 5 1. Haaland stays as the focal point if they need to go long. They are a tall side so set plays will be important to defend.Go big or go home?I was thinking: will Tuchel go for big Dan Burn to mark Haaland? Probably not but it’s worth a thought. Haaland will fancy getting the better of Ezri Konsa in a straight physical duel.If you get to tight he rolls you or spins down the side. If you stand off he turns and attacks the space. It’s vital England keep the ball, dominate possession and keep him out the game.Crosses coming into the box are his bread and butter. This is why Dan Burn or the snubbed Harry Maguire would be better equipped than our current two centre backs, Konsa and Marc Guehi. Our two centre backs will be good against pace and movement but are not dominant centre backs when crosses are coming in the box. Big Dan could go man to man on corners against Haaland who is just like the tank.Keep the ball and carry onEngland rely on Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham to get the first contact. Overall if England keep the ball like England did against Mexico up to the first water break we should get chances.I saw weakness in both Norway centre backs when up against pace and clever movement. So it’s Haaland and the foot soldiers in this story. Keep Haaland quiet and take care of the foot soldiers.I don't see them stopping Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane. Plus Anthony Gordon now stepping up.VerdictEngland need players wearing what I call big boy pants. It’s about mentality. Eliot Anderson and Declan Rice are much better than any of their midfielders. I’m very confident especially now we have the right coach. England will win.Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
