For more than 200 years, public train services have changed the way Britons travel, whether that be for a daily commute or a travel experience.

From Devon to Yorkshire, both steam and diesel engine trains host trips through heritage routes and stations, offering spectacular views of rolling hills and the English seaside.

While community action groups work to save heritage features of the railway from dereliction, there are other nostalgic journeys around the UK that offer a glimpse of rail travel from years gone by, from the world’s oldest continuously working railway – the 1758 Middleton Railway in Leeds – to restored 80s InterCity Swallow trains that make special journeys across the country.
