Sir, – I welcomed your article, “Kushner’s €4bn Adriatic resort is snowballing into a political crisis”, examining the political controversy surrounding the proposed development in Albania (Greece Letter, July 7th).However, the description of Albania as a “primitive tribal society”, through reference to the now almost extinct tradition of “sworn virgins”, may leave readers with the impression that this is representative of contemporary Albania. This historical custom belongs to a specific historical and regional context and is no more representative of Albania today than Ireland’s own historical social practices are of modern Irish society.The article goes on to describe a country grappling with issues familiar across Europe: transparency, good governance, environmental protection, foreign investment and democratic accountability.
