Seeing Tyla headline Afro Nation Portugal made one thing crystal clear,
I used to wonder why anyone would travel halfway across the world to watch artists they could easily see in South Africa. Then I experienced Afro Nation Portugal.
Having seen years of videos and photos showcasing all the fun that goes down in Praia da Rocha in Portimão, I had an idea of what to expect. I thought I knew what to expect when IOL was invited to experience the superstar's performance by Sony Music Africa, but nothing could have prepared me for the spellbinding experience.
The excitement at hearing someone speak vernacular from South Africa or seeing them wearing a Bafana Bafana jersey or clothing by a local designer or just seeing our beautiful flag was another reminder that we are outside.
South Africans are generally friendly people, but there is a different warmth that comes with greeting a fellow South African on the beach in Portimão or just breaking into a dance together after instantly recognising each other as South Africans.
