Arsenal cannot stand still this summer. There is a recognition of that, with interest in multiple left wingers and central midfielders, but those positions are not their sole focus. As The Athletic reported this summer, full-back is another area of interest. At right-back, Ben White’s future is undecided, particularly due to his medial knee ligament injury, and it could be the best time to refresh that unit. White is 28, with two years left on his contract and while Jurrien Timber, 25, has established himself as one of Europe’s leading right-backs, he could do with competition and rotation. Here, The Athletic looks at right-back options who could suit Arsenal in the 2026-27 season, but first, a question…What does Mikel Arteta ask of his right-backs?The reality of having both Timber and White is that the Arsenal manager can use them differently.White arrived at Arsenal as a centre-back in 2021, but Arteta utilised his athleticism and willingness to push forward the year after. White’s overlapping runs and interplay with Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard from right-back were cornerstones of Arsenal’s first title races as he added another body to attacks that opposition teams struggled to contain. In contrast, Timber tends to move into more central areas when Arsenal attack. Last season, that positional shift contributed to him ranking fifth for chances created from open play (26) and joint-fourth for big chances missed (seven) at Arsenal.Whoever plays at right-back is expected to play a key role in Arsenal’s high press to suffocate opponents, often pushing way past the halfway line to pressure wingers and full-backs.Timber and White bring contrasting qualities to the right-back roel under Arteta (Justin Setterfield/Getty Images)Tino LivramentoLivramento is still just 23. The full-back’s first full Premier League season came as an 18-year-old in 2021, making him one of the most established name on this list.Arsenal are fans of the Newcastle United right-back, but there are understandable concerns over his injury record. Livramento’s most recent injury (calf) cost him his place in England’s World Cup squad, while two knee injuries, a hamstring injury and a thigh injury limited him to 17 league appearances last season. He did manage to play 37 out of 38 league matches in the 2024-25 season, but has had rotten luck with ankle injuries the year before and an anterior cruciate ligament injury while at Southampton. To provide the fairest representation of what Livramento can offer over a full season, we look at his 2024-25 campaign. Below, you can see the England international is well-rounded, as he progresses the ball well with both carries and passes, and is good on the ball (seen in his high link-up play and ball-retention rankings). For an example of what this can look like in one passage of play, here is an example from the full-back’s debut season at Newcastle.Livramento’s versatility is also a major upside. He excels at both right-back and left-back, which is a quality Mikel Arteta adores in full-backs. This was first seen with Takehiro Tomiyasu, who he initially fielded on the left to stop Mohamed Salah, but also with Timber. The Arsenal manager has also seen first-hand how Livramento’s interpretation of the role can hurt teams. Arsenal narrowly beat Newcastle 1-0 in May 2025, and early on, movements like the one below from Livramento helped Eddie Howe’s side create dangerous moments. It may also be worth noting that Livramento has mutual connections to Arsenal. A product of the Chelsea academy, he was coached by former Arsenal and Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole as an under-21 player. At Southampton, he shared a dressing room with former Arsenal winger Theo Walcott. To read more of what they had to say about a younger Livramento, the pair gave their memories of him during his triumphant Under-21 European Championship campaign with England last summer.Ivan FresnedaThis name may ring a bell for some, as Arsenal were among the clubs interested in Ivan Fresneda when he was 18 at Real Valladolid in 2023. The Spain Under-21 international joined Sporting CP that summer for €9million, and three years on, Arsenal are still following his progress. At the time of joining Sporting, Fresneda’s 1,743 minutes played ranked third across Europe’s top five leagues. While he is a strong ball-carrier like Livramento, it was his defensive solidity that stood out.
