The Nigerian Bar Association has insisted that its 2026 national officers’ election will proceed as scheduled despite a controversy over alleged directives linked to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), seeking to halt the exercise.
The association, on Tuesday, rejected what it described as an attempt to interfere in its internal affairs, maintaining that only its constitutional organs have the authority to determine the conduct or postponement of the election.
This is as the former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof Chidi Odinkalu, accused the AGF of attempting to use his office to take control of the association ahead of the poll.
The 2026 NBA National Officers’ Election has been moved from Monday, July 20, 2026, to Saturday, July 18, 2026, while the announcement of results will take place on Sunday, July 19, 2026.
In a statement on Tuesday signed by NBA President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), the association insisted that only its National Executive Council has the constitutional authority to postpone the election, insisting that the NBA is an independent professional body not subject to the control of the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.
