DETROIT — Two years ago, Joey Cora was the coach who stood before the team and gave an impassioned speech about the need to be more aggressive on the bases, a meeting that helped spark the Detroit Tigers’ miraculous 2024 playoff run. Now, Cora is out as the Tigers’ third-base coach.Manager A.J. Hinch said he met with Cora on Tuesday morning, and the two mutually agreed to part ways. Hinch reiterated this was purely a baseball decision.Billy Boyer, formerly the team’s quality control coach, will take over Cora’s duties coaching third base and infielders.“I know that news is going to be surprising to a lot of people,” Hinch said. “I love Joey. Joey loved being a Tiger. He’s been instrumental in his time here. But similar to a family, sometimes it doesn’t last forever. We had some philosophical differences, and we both just agreed it was probably best for the players and everybody to separate.”Cora, the brother of former Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora — who was also fired this season — joined Hinch’s staff before the 2024 season. He quickly developed a reputation for his intensity when working with infielders and his tendency to give green lights as the third-base coach. Partially under Cora’s influence, the Tigers became among the league’s most daring teams on the bases. Last season’s club finished with a 53 extra bases taken percentage, meaning runners advanced more than one base on singles or more than two bases on doubles at the highest clip of any team since 1975.
