Joe Sargent / Getty ImagesJuly 7, 2026 Updated 4:12 pm EDTPittsburgh Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin is estimated to miss eight to 10 weeks with an injury to his left ring finger, the team’s senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk told reporters on Tuesday, worsening the Pirates’ injury woes as they seek to remain in contention.Griffin, who had just returned to the Pirates two weeks ago after missing a month with a right elbow strain, specifically injured the sagittal band on his finger, which, as Tomczyk noted, is “thick fibers that connect tissue that reinforces and support the extensor tendon.” Tomczyk said that the plan is for Griffin to wear a splint for the next six weeks, at which point his prognosis will be reexamined. ESPN was the first outlet to report that Griffin would miss time with a finger injury. While a fellow young star, Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony, has been out since early May with an injury to the tendon in his right ring finger, the injuries are not entirely comparable. A better analogue might be former White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson, who injured the sagittal band in his left middle finger in mid-August of the 2022 season. The injury was expected to sideline him for six weeks, which was essentially the remainder of the regular season.
