By Henry OjeluABUJA — Travellers arriving at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, have expressed concerns over customs tariff charges imposed on goods valued above $300, describing the practice as burdensome and capable of discouraging both returning Nigerians and foreign visitors.
Some passengers who spoke with journalists at the airport said they were subjected to harassment and additional scrutiny by officials upon arrival and required to pay duties on certain items brought into the country.
Mr. Kalu Abia, a passenger who recently arrived from the United Kingdom, said many travellers were often unaware of the applicable duty requirements until they were stopped for inspection.
According to him, while customs authorities have a responsibility to enforce import regulations, passengers should be adequately informed about items that attract duties before arriving in the country.
“Many people are caught unaware when they arrive. There is a need for more public awareness and transparency so that passengers know exactly what is expected of them before they travel,” Abia said.
