England are set to come up against Erling Haaland in their World Cup quarter-final against Norway with Three Lions players and staff agonising over how to stop the Manchester City powerhouse17:32, 07 Jul 2026Marc Guehi fears Erling Haaland will be a man on a mission against England. England defender Guehi admits his Manchester City teammate will be “up for it” in Saturday’s World Cup quarter final in Miami.Norway have lived up to their billing as World Cup dark horses as Haaland’s double against Brazil in the last 16 took him to seven goals in the tournament. Haaland has also scored against ALL of England’s centre halves when he has faced them - including SEVEN against former Crystal Palace defender Guehi before he joined City.Guehi said: “I know he'll be up for it. It'll be a challenge, but it's good to see some familiar faces and try and do our best and try and get a win. It’s going to be fun, it will be fun.”City defender Guehi also insists that England will be ready for Norway because the team spirit and togetherness has grown even stronger through this tournament. Guehi said: “Trust. We already had it before but trust even more. We spoke about stuff coming into it.“I think everybody having that bond and that trust for one another and hopefully we can keep building that up. Let’s kick on.”But England will need to find a way to stop Haaland. City’s record-breaking goalscorer destroyed Brazil, has got dreams of winning the World Cup Golden Boot and is the main reason why Norway are still on the march. It has been a remarkable ride spearheaded Haaland who outmuscled his bitter Premier League rival, Arsenal defender Gabriel, to head in the first and beat Liverpool’s Brazil keeper Alisson Becker from long range with an incredible low shot. The point about this is that even though players know Haaland inside out… stopping him is quite another matter. His goals - and the social media clips which have since done the rounds - are so typical of Haaland. He has been lolloping about on the pitch, almost hunched shoulders, and then just comes alive with an incredible piece of brilliance. He is genuinely a global superstar,Guehi only moved to City in January, spent 125 days at the club with him before going on World Cup duty. But knowing him - John Stones does also, of course, but has always been his teammate - is no guarantee of stopping him.Guehi has played against him four times and Haaland scored seven against him. Ezri Konsa has faced him five times and conceded just once. Impressively, Konsa has beaten him three times out of those five games.Dan Burn has faced him six times and conceded just once. Trevoh Chalobah has faced him five times, conceded twice and never beaten Haaland. How to stop him? Basically, the answer is you can’t. The best and most effective way is to starve him of service, possession and space. Get him to drop deep where his chances are limited. That is what teams have tried to do in the Premier League and that will be England’s task in the quarter final because his power, speed, strength and aerial dominance make him an unstoppable force. Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson as England’s midfield shield will be vital.Haaland as a person and character is also ice cold. He has a big sense of humour and the camaraderie within the Norway dressing room looks fantastic from the outside. He is the heartbeat of the squad.Guehi's pace, quality and tenacity will be key. His reading of the game and danger signs are his great strengths. Guehi also believes that England will take a lot from their win over Mexico and the way that it has instilled belief into the players could be key for the rest of their tournament.Plus he praised the support of the fans and the way they have backed them in the stadiums and from home. Guehi told the FA’s Lions’ Den show: “I don’t think it’s sunk in. It was just such an amazing moment for everyone watching at home. And It was so emotional, and in those moments that's just all relief, all the energy just zapped out. So a really good moment.“The hype about the Azteca was real! I’ll be honest I didn’t believe it all, everyone talking. But after twenty minutes, I was feeling it as well. That drink break was needed!“And then the noise was probably the loudest stadium I've played in for sure. There were times when crazy stuff was going on.“It was top. We speak a lot about the togetherness of this team and for everyone that defined it, especially in that game. Not just the guys I started but definitely every single person that came on.“Even the lads that didn't come on, like the support that you felt from even the bench was top. So real team performance.“Thank you so much for the support. We definitely feel it, all the fans that travelled, thank you so much. Even in the Azteca. Still making your voice heard, and everyone's staying up past their bedtimes to watch the game. Way past their bedtimes! Thank you.”Article continues belowJoin our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
