Welcome to our live coverage of US politics and events in the Middle East. Donald Trump has arrived for the crucial annual summit of the NATO defence alliance. And he doesn’t seem happy. In a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, after the Qatar donated Air Force One landed in Ankara, he lambasted many NATO allies saying he was “very disappointed” in them. “We’ve invested trillions of dollars in NATO. Why? To protect people, generally speaking, from … Russia. But you would think that they’d be very willing to do something to help us, and they really weren’t.”European nations have said they were not consulted about the Iran war and NATO is a defence alliance not a collection of armies that can be used by other nations at a whim.Undoubtedly, to the dismay of European leaders, Mr Trump also resurrected his desire to take over Greenland, which is part of Denmark’s kingdom.“It should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark,” he said. The US president’s comments have set the scene for a frosty meeting. But NATO members are still hoping to placate Mr Trump with expensive commitments to new American made weaponry. Meanwhile, Republican Senator Mitch McConnell is “officially brain dead” a top Trump source – but also a noted conspiracy theorist – has claimed.Laura Loomer claimed a high level source in the White House told her Mr McConnell was “not coming back,” she wrote in a post on X.The 84-year-old was rushed to hospital in a critical condition three weeks ago.Ms Loomer’s claims have not been substantiated. Meanwhile, Iran opened fire on two commercials ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, according to reports.Read on for more updates.
