Former Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran, who hit the winning runs in his nation’s first World Cup victory, has died one day before his 39th birthday.As reported by ESPN, Zadran spent his final months in hospital in Delhi with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) — a rare, life-threatening disease, in which the immune system starts failing.The left-armer represented Afghanistan between 2009 and 2020, taking 80 wickets across 44 ODIs and 36 T20I matches. He famously hit the winning runs as Afghanistan won their first World Cup game in 2015, defeating Scotland.

“He was among the proud cricketers who stood at the heart of Afghanistan’s early cricket journey and helped build the path that brought Afghan cricket to the international stage.”It added: “Beyond his achievements on the field, Shapoor Zadran was a true source of inspiration for many young Afghan cricketers and for cricket followers across the world.“His fighting spirit, determination, and love for the game gave hope to many and encouraged a generation to dream bigger and believe in the future of Afghanistan cricket.”Ravi Shastri, former India all-rounder and team coach, posted on X: “Really sad to hear about the passing of Shapoor Zadran.“One of the main architects behind Afghanistan’s rise in world cricket, his contribution to the game and the team’s journey will always be remembered.“A life dedicated to the sport.
