Marine Le Pen was sentenced to three years in prison, one year with an ankle bracelet, and fined $113,398 for embezzling public funds.

The appeals court upheld Ms Le Pen's guilty verdict, potentially opening the door for her political heir, Jordan Bardella, to contest the presidency.

Ms Le Pen was found guilty of organising eight fictitious contracts worth $542,000 during her time in the European Parliament.

The far-right leader has repeatedly ruled out running for president under ankle bracelet restrictions, saying such conditions would limit her freedom of movement.
