The enduring brilliance of Victorian comic opera is set to reclaim the spotlight as a vibrant and bold new staging of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance sails into Artscape this winter. Running for a strictly limited season from 4 to 12 July 2026, this ambitious presentation by G&S promises a thrilling injection of theatrical energy into a timeless masterpiece, combining a mammoth cast of more than 60 performers and dancers with the increasingly rare luxury of a full live orchestra.
At a time when large live ensembles are tragically vanishing from musical theatre and comic opera pits worldwide, audiences will have a rare opportunity to experience Arthur Sullivan’s sparkling score in its complete, uncompromised glory. Providing the live accompaniment is the newly formed Cape Town Sinfonietta, a magnificent 26-piece orchestra whose presence ensures the production will deliver musical brilliance alongside its visual spectacle.

First performed in 1879, The Pirates of Penzance remains one of the theatrical canon’s most popular and exhilarating works, beloved for its razor-sharp humour, fast-paced storytelling and swashbuckling adventure. This fresh interpretation, directed by Darryl J. Spijkers with meticulous musical direction by Alastair Cockburn, remains firmly and affectionately rooted in its original Victorian-era setting and charm.
