Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that negotiations to reach a final agreement will not commence as long as threats against the Islamic Republic continue.
On Tuesday, July 7, Araghchi wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) account: “Paragraph 13 of the Memorandum of Understanding is completely clear and explicit: as long as threats against Iran continue, negotiations to reach a final agreement will not begin. Abide by your signature.”
The Iranian foreign minister’s remarks came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump issued another threat against Tehran, stating that he would “finish the job” if an agreement with Iran is not reached.
Araghchi also pointed to the funeral procession of Ali Khamenei, claiming that “millions of proud Iranians gathered with unity and empathy” to pay their respects to the late Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic. He added that “neither they nor our courageous armed forces harbor any fear of any threat.”
The war of words between officials in Tehran and Washington continues despite both sides having held several rounds of indirect talks mediated by Oman over the past few months. Nevertheless, disputes over Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions, and the guarantees sought by both sides remain the most significant obstacles to reaching a final agreement.
