Winners of the 2026 South African Open Chess Championships.

The 2026 South African Open Chess Championships have concluded, marking one of the largest and most successful tournaments in the event’s history. Held from 27 June to 5 July at DF Akademie High School in Bellville, the championship drew more than 500 competitors, cementing its status as a premier fixture on the national sports calendar.

The tournament, hosted by the Western Cape Chess Association under the auspices of Chess South Africa, offered a total prize fund of R159,100, attracting a diverse field of elite players, rising stars, and international challengers.

A Focus on Future Talent

While the Championship section showcased high-level play, organisers emphasised that the event’s primary legacy lies in its development of young talent. The junior age-group sections served as a critical gateway to the international stage. The top performers across these categories have secured qualification for the next World Individual Schools Chess Championship, with the top five in each section qualifying for the African Individual Schools Chess Championship. This developmental focus reflects the growing recognition of the sport as a tool for youth engagement and critical thinking.
