Jason Statham stars in this 2000s remake of 1975’s “Death Race.” From director Paul W. S. Anderson, most known for his sprawling but largely subpar “Resident Evil” series, it was no critical darling, but I consider this one a guilty pleasure. Its narrative is flimsy, and many of the characters aren’t particularly likeable, but the action comes thick and fast, and the central concept of a high-speed race to the death is ripe for thrilling sequences.Set in an alternative United States where economic downturn and rising crime rates have demanded a radical solution, Warden Claire Hennessey (Joan Allen) creates “Death Race.” A three-day live-streamed event in which prisoners race in weaponized cars for a shot at freedom. Forced to compete is Jensen Ames (Statham), an industrial worker framed for the murder of his wife. The tournament is petrol-fuelled mayhem, where the only rule is to drive fast and do whatever it takes to cross the finish line.Watch "Death Race" on Prime Video now'Homefront' (2013)
