Belgium couldn't wait to rub Donald Trump's nose in it as they knocked the US out of the World Cup10:24, 07 Jul 2026Donald Trump is no stranger to being mocked after a US sporting defeat. The president was hilariously ridiculed by Belgium players, who appeared to mimic Trump's signature dance moves following their final goal in the 4-1 win over the US.‌Trump had sparked outrage ahead of the last-16 tie by lobbying FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review US striker Folarin Balogun's red card in the win over Bosnia & Herzegovina. The world governing body promptly announced that the automatic one-match ban for Balogun's dismissal had been suspended, controversially making him available for the match.‌Belgium then saw an appeal against the decision thrown out. However, Rudi Garcia's side had the last laugh in Seattle as goals from Charles De Ketelaere (twice), Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku set up a quarter-final against Spain.‌Having felt aggrieved by the Balogun saga, the Belgians rubbed it in with their celebratory Trump-style jig, which presumably won't have gone down well with the US leader.Get the latest World Cup news straight to your inbox by signing up to our Make Football Great Again newsletter now! It's not the first time the president has been teased by a sporting team. Following Europe's epic victory over Team USA at last year's Ryder Cup in New York, Rory McIlroy recorded the team singing "Are you watching Donald Trump?" with the cup.‌The clip soon reached the president, who surprisingly took the taunts well. Commenting on Truth Social, he said: "Yes, I'm watching. Congratulations!"Meanwhile, the fallout from Trump's World Cup intervention is set to run and run, with Infantino facing calls to resign. FIFA has strict rules around political interference in the business of its national associations, with the Nepalese federation suspended just last month for third-party interference.Content cannot be displayed without consent‌Infantino issued a statement on Monday saying the decision had been taken by its independent disciplinary committee, only for Trump to reveal he had lobbied Infantino. The president said: "I saw the play. That [challenge by Balogun] wasn't a foul, that wasn't even an infraction. That was two guys running full speed that happened to crash into each other."These were two great athletes that got tangled up and this referee, who is a little bit suspect, if you check his past, he made a call that nobody could believe. He [Balogun] didn't do anything wrong and he's our best player, or one of our best players. And he gave him a red card.‌"It's very unfair, you can't do that. So, yes, I asked for a review by FIFA. I spoke to a man who's highly respected [Infantino] and by the way, whose level of respect has gone up tenfold."However, Infantino will presumably be wishing Trump had kept details of their chat private as pressure intensifies on the FIFA chief.Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
