‘Isidlamlilo/The Fire Eater’, a stage play about a female assassin, received top accolades at the Cape Town Theatre Awards as it won each of the seven categories it was nominated for.
The annual awards, held at the Baxter Theatre on Sunday, recognised the best theatre practitioners across various categories for shows performed in Cape Town the preceding year. Until last year, it was called the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards.
‘Isidlamlilo’ was named Best Production and also won awards for Best New South African Script; Best Performance in a Revue, Cabaret or One-Person Show; Best Lighting; Best Set Design; Best Sound Design, Original Music, Soundscape or Live Performance; and Best Director.
Actress Mpume Mthombeni stars in this play and also wrote it with its director Neil Coppen. Her award for Best Performance in a Revue, Cabaret or One-Person Show was, for what has been described as, an “electrifying one-woman show”.
