Sir, – Justine McCarthy’s charge that “golf is a rich sport with poor principles” seems a little off the mark (“What will Trump have to do before Ireland’s golfers have had enough?,” Opinion, July 3rd). I have played golf for more than 50 years and have had the privilege of membership of Grange Golf Club. During this time I have had the good fortune to witness countless instances of courage, honesty, decency, fairness and sportsmanship. Yet McCarthy seems correct in her assessment that the Irish Open will be well attended and will be lucrative for its many stakeholders despite the cited appalling actions of Donald Trump. Notwithstanding my affection for west Clare and the Irish Open, which I have attended on many occasions, this is one event from which I will abstain. – Yours, etc,JOHN BOURKE,Dublin 6.

Great event and venue, pity about the US president’s appalling actions
