Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued an urgent plea over the nation’s “insufficient supply” of interceptor missiles after a “massive” Russian attack killed at least 26 people.Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 68 missiles, including 23 ballistic missiles and 351 drones at the nation during a large-scale attack on Kyiv on Sunday.Eighteen people were killed in the capital, and another eight in Vyshneve, a town just outside Kyiv, authorities said.Mr Zelensky said Ukraine managed to shoot down six Kalibr missiles and intercepted 31 out of 33 cruise missiles, but it wasn’t able to stop Russia’s ballistic missiles.“Last night, Kyiv came under a massive Russian attack,” he wrote in a statement on X.“Our warriors performed well today in intercepting drones and cruise missiles, but unfortunately not Russian ballistic missiles. And the reason lies in the insufficient supply of interceptor missiles.”Mr Zelensky pleaded for allies to send Kyiv missiles for US-made Patriot air defence systems ahead of a crucial NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.“It is critically important that the world – first and foremost the United States and our European partners – come out of the NATO Summit in Ankara with strong decisions in support of our air defence, and thus the protection of ordinary people’s lives,” he said. “As long as Patriot missiles remain in our allies’ stockpiles, Russia is only encouraged to keep ‘vanquishing’ residential buildings. The United States and Europe have enough strength to stop this terror.”‘Nonsensical’ In a separate post, Mr Zelensky said increasing its supply of air defence missiles was the nation’s “top priority”.“It is simply nonsensical that, in today’s world, production has still not been scaled up to the level that is actually needed to protect people from ballistic terror,” he wrote. “We have long made the case that we are capable of producing such defensive weapons ourselves. If Ukraine were granted U.S. licenses to produce Patriots, our own production would be sufficient both to protect Ukraine and to help partners in need.“We are in contact with everyone around the world who can provide air defence missiles now. This is our top priority.”It comes after NATO chief Mark Rutte earlier called on allies and NATO partners to “continue to ensure Ukraine gets what it needs”.“Let me be clear, all Allies need to pull their weight, so that our support to Ukraine continues to flow. Because Ukraine’s security is so closely linked with our own,” he said in Ankara. US-led attempts to broker an end to the war have gone nowhere. The White House said US President Donald Trump would meet Mr Zelensky on Wednesday during the NATO summit. “The president’s obviously getting together with him to talk about how we can end the war. That’s been a priority of his for a long time,” a senior US official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. The official said Mr Trump would “follow up” with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The latest attack on Ukraine came just days after another Russian strike killed more than 30 people in the Ukrainian capital.Around 30 residential buildings in Kyiv were hit, officials said. The attack punched a crater into a multistorey apartment block in the city's Podilsky district, ripping its floors in two.In the Kyiv region of Vyshneve, authorities said they evacuated around 500 people after the strikes.Ukraine strikes Siberia refineryWhile Kyiv reeled from the attack, the Ukrainian army said it had struck an oil refinery in Russia’s Omsk region, around 2,500 kilometres from Ukraine’s border, in one of its deepest hits during the almost four-and-a-half-year war.Mr Zelensky said Kyiv used “upgraded Fire Point drones” – Ukrainian long-range drones – for the strike.“Siberia is now also within reach of Ukrainian precision,” he said. Ukraine has struck targets far inside Russia in recent months, triggering national fuel shortages.Ukraine’s general staff said the Omsk refinery was “involved in supplying the Russian occupation army”.The governor of Omsk, which borders Kazakhstan, confirmed the refinery had been hit by drones, saying there were no casualties.Moscow’s army said its forces had shot down more than 500 Ukrainian drones overnight.– With AFP
