Czech patients with stable chronic conditions will soon be able to obtain more than 1,200 reimbursed medicines directly from their general practitioner

General practitioners (GPs) in Czechia can now prescribe selected reimbursed medicines for both adults and children, previously restricted to outpatient specialists.

The amendment to the regulation on prescribing medicines is designed to improve access to treatment, reduce unnecessary specialist visits and free up specialist capacity for more complex cases. The reform took effect as of 1 July 2026.

The change addresses a long-standing situation in which many patients have had to repeatedly visit specialists only to obtain prescriptions for medicines they have been taking for years despite having stable medical conditions.

“Patients should not have to navigate the healthcare system simply to obtain a prescription. If their condition is stable and the necessary conditions are met, they should be able to receive the medicine they need from their general practitioner,” said Health Minister Adam Vojtěch.
