Raising fines for speeding alone will not significantly improve road safety in Ukraine, and should be accompanied by a penalty points system and the temporary suspension of driving licenses for repeat offenders.

Ukrainian lawmaker Volodymyr Kreidenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, said this in a comment to Ukrinform.

"Unfortunately, the fines currently imposed in Ukraine for speeding have long since become outdated and no longer act as a sufficient deterrent to prevent drivers from violating speed limits," he said.

According to Kreidenko, lawmakers are considering increasing penalties for speeding. Under the proposal, the fine for exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h would double from UAH 340 to UAH 680. Exceeding the limit by more than 40 km/h would carry a fine of UAH 2,040, while speeding by more than 60 km/h would result in a UAH 2,720 fine. Drivers exceeding the speed limit by more than 80 km/h would face a UAH 3,400 penalty.

He added that habitual speed offenders would face much harsher sanctions.
