Disability benefits assessments look set for a radical overhaul after the minister in charge of reviewing the system said there was a “strong case” for redesigning the process.

Disability minister Sir Stephen Timms, who is co-chairing the first Government-led review into Personal Independent Payments (PIP), has also signalled reforms to help support claimants into work.

The Timms Review – which was commissioned to ensure the benefit which supports disabled people to live independently is fair – is set to publish its interim report in the coming days, with the final recommendations expected in the autumn.

A steering group, which is chaired by Timms and includes panellists who have lived experience of disability, will shape the proposals.
