The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Monday condemned Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar for “acting against” the Constitution and said some of his actions crossed the limits of the State government’s authority.A resolution to this effect was adopted at the CPI Tamil Nadu State executive and district secretaries meeting in Tiruchi.Another resolution said the CPI would embark on a nation-wide padayatra campaign from August 6 to 15 to explain in detail to the people about the “anti-people” policies pursued by the BJP-led NDA government, its support to the multi-national companies and the dangers it could pose to the country besides on a host of people’s related issues and demands. Citing the recent purported remarks of the Governor on the rejuvenation and restoration of the Vaigai in Madurai and to convey the public grievances to the Lok Bhavan, the resolution said this was nothing but an act of the Governor taking away the State government’s administrative responsibilities.Similarly, conducting review meetings with officials and directly interfering in the administrative actions would only create a wrong notion among the people that a parallel administrative structure was functioning in the State. Such actions were contradictory to the federal system formulated by the Constitution and the authority of the State government duly elected by the people. As per the Constitution, the post of the Governor was to act as per the advice of the State cabinet. Acting in a manner of running a parallel government was nothing but an effort to weaken the fundamental principles of the federal system, the resolution said and added that the CPI condemned all such actions of the Governor which were contradictory to the Constitution and interfering with the State government’s authority. The resolution urged the Governor to respect the federal system and State’s rights and act within the powers as defined in the Constitution. The CPI invited all democratic secular forces and Left oriented progressive forces to jointly fight in protecting States rights, democracy and federal structure. The meeting presided over by the party’s State executive member M. Kannagi. CPI State secretary M. Veerapandian was present. among others. Published - July 06, 2026 09:15 pm IST
