The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka for Tuesday and Wednesday, warning of extremely heavy rainfall of more than 204.5 mm.The red alert will remain in force till 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday. It will thereafter be downgraded to an orange alert, valid till 8.30 a.m. on Thursday, with very heavy rainfall of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm forecast.Student injuredMeanwhile, a girl student was injured when a tile from the roof of a primary school, dislodged by strong winds, fell on her leg at Varamballi village in Brahmavar taluk of Udupi district on Monday morning. Revenue officials said the injury was minor.In all, 14 houses were damaged in Udupi district due to rain and wind in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday. Of them, 12 houses were in Kundapur taluk and one each was in Byndoor and Hebri taluks.Udupi district recorded 45.3 mm of rainfall during the period. The maximum rainfall of 71.7 mm was recorded in Kundapur taluk, while the minimum of 19.9 mm was recorded in Kaup taluk, according to the Office of the Deputy Commissioner.Electricity poles damagedAccording to the Dakshina Kannada District Disaster Management Authority, 248 electricity poles and 12.4 km of power supply lines of Mescom were damaged in the district during the period.The district recorded 35.8 mm of rainfall against the normal 35.6 mm for the period.The maximum rainfall of 52.8 mm was recorded in Belthangady taluk and the minimum of 11.9 mm in Mulki taluk.Coastal Karnataka recorded 639.1 mm of rainfall against the normal 1,022.8 mm from June 2026 to July 5, till 8.30 a.m. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre said this amounted to a 38% deficit in rainfall.
