West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday said the government would ensure justice for the family of the 11-year-old girl, allegedly raped and murdered at South 24 Parganas’ Baruipur, and press for handing out capital punishment for the offenders.The police have so far arrested three people in connection with the alleged rape and murder of the girl, who had been missing since Saturday afternoon and was found dead in a pond on Sunday. The post-mortem report indicated that she was sexually assaulted and thrown into the water alive.A six-member Special Investigating Team (SIT) has been formed after a murder case was lodged. A case has also been registered under Pocso (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act.“After the incident, I spoke to the victim’s father. Whatever the family has sought from the administration, the government will deliver it,” Adhikari told mediapersons.“I will visit Baruipur tomorrow and will meet the victim’s father. We will also see what the police did after recording the girl’s missing. If police officers are found to have been irresponsible, action would be taken. There is no compromise,” he said, adding the accused should be given capital punishment.“We want exemplary punishment so that such incidents are not repeated. No one will be spared.” the Chief Minister added. Police arrested the key accused in the case on Monday, taking the total number of arrests in the case to three.Widespread protestsThe gruesome incident has triggered widespread protests and an angry mob lynched a man suspected of involvement in the crime on Sunday.Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee took out a rally from her Kalighat residence in Kolkata on Monday to protest the alleged rape and murder of the minor girl in Baruipur.Holding a lit candle in her hand, Banerjee led the rally, in which Trinamool Congress MPs Dola Sen, Pratima Mondal and Derek O’Brien joined.
