A BJP delegation led by Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar met Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy on Monday and urged him to take immediate steps to ensure that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the Narasimharaja Assembly constituency is conducted in a transparent manner, alleging violations of Election Commission of India guidelines.Submitting a memorandum, the delegation alleged that door-to-door distribution of enumeration forms was not being carried out in several parts of the constituency. It also claimed that the party’s Booth Level Agents (BLAs) were not being allowed to participate in the exercise and alleged that enumeration forms of deceased voters were being submitted. The BJP further demanded police protection for its BLAs, contending that party representatives, other than those from the Congress and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), were finding it difficult to take part in the revision process.Responding to the memorandum, Mr. Reddy said the complaints would be examined and necessary directions issued to Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and other election officials. He said a meeting of BLAs from all political parties would be convened either on Tuesday or Wednesday to review the exercise. “I am also holding a video conference with BLOs tonight to get an update on the exercise and take appropriate action wherever necessary,” he said.Clarifying the procedure, the Deputy Commissioner said the SIR exercise, which will continue till July 29, is currently limited to the distribution and collection of enumeration forms. Verification of the electoral rolls will begin only after the publication of the draft electoral roll on August 5.“Once the draft roll is published, it will be shared with all political parties. They can file objections, which will be examined through due inquiry by the competent authorities. No verification is being carried out at this stage,” he said.Referring to the BJP’s allegation that forms of deceased voters were being submitted, Mr. Reddy said political parties could identify such names after the draft roll is published and bring them to the notice of the election authorities. “If any voter is found to be deceased after due inquiry, the name will be deleted from the electoral roll,” he said.Emphasising the importance of BLAs in the revision process, Mr. Reddy said they play a crucial role because of their familiarity with voters in their respective booths. He added that if political parties were not satisfied with the action taken by the district administration, they were free to approach the higher authorities of the Election Commission.
