German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has become significantly more cautious in his approach to supporting Ukraine since taking office than he was as opposition leader.
Robin Wagener, Head of the German-Ukrainian Parliamentary Friendship Group and a lawmaker from the Alliance 90/The Greens said this in an interview with Ukrinform.
"At the same time, I must note that Chancellor Friedrich Merz is acting much more cautiously than Friedrich Merz did when he was the leader of the opposition. One only has to recall the debate over Taurus missiles. As an opposition politician, he strongly advocated supplying Ukraine with these cruise missiles, and in my view, rightly so. But since becoming Chancellor, he has yet to make such a decision."
According to Wagener, the current German government has largely continued the previous coalition's policy of supporting Ukraine, allowing Germany to remain Kyiv's most important European partner.
"In my view, the government remains too hesitant on many issues. At the same time, it is precisely because of this policy that Germany remains Ukraine's most important partner," he said.
