An oversight inspection has revealed that the Moreleta River continues to suffer from raw sewage spillages, endangering local communities and the environment, despite local government attempts to address the crisis.
An oversight inspection of the section of the Moreleta River that has been plagued by raw sewage spillages has confirmed that the problem persists, posing risks to the surrounding communities and the environment.
The recent inspection by the Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng confirmed that the long-standing problem continues.
The party said the health and well-being of residents remained at risk due to raw sewage flowing "unabated" into the Moreleta River despite the City of Tshwane's attempts to repair the pipe and implement temporary containment measures.
The River joins the Hartebees Spruit system, which drains into the Pienaars River catchment and ultimately into the Roodeplaat Dam, which is a critical water resource for the region. Beyond the dam, the contamination flows further into the Pienaars River, then the Crocodile River, and ultimately toward the Limpopo River system.
