Clear skies can quickly turn torrential: a fact I learnt first-hand working outside as a security guard for 19 years. If the heavens open up on you this summer, you’ll need a thin shell jacket that can keep the rain out without making you too warm. Here are my personal favourites.
Scruffs worker softshell jacket
£39.99
A decent downpour-resistant jacket shouldn’t cost the earth, especially if you’re standing in a field. This two-layer style is breathable, hooded, features elasticated cuffs to stop mud creeping into your sleeves and costs less than a set of German wire strippers. It may lack the waterproofing of premium mountainwear but it’s still incredibly robust for the price.
