While America pondered how enthusiastically to celebrate its 250th birthday, in Springfield, Ohio, there were more immediately important events taking place.
If that city’s name rings a bell, that is due to President Donald Trump. His entirely false claim that Haitian immigrants were “eating the dogs and cats” became one of many appalling hallmarks of his successful 2024 campaign to return to the Oval Office.
Repeated on multiple occasions, not a single reporter dispatched to the city by any American news organisation was able to unearth any evidence to support the President’s accusation, which had originated from a hoax Facebook post.
