Our man at the Azteca stadium reacts after England beat Mexico 3-2 in front of more than 80,000 supporters at the Azteca stadium, a match in which Jude Bellingham scored twiceAndy Lines, at the Azteca stadium05:58, 06 Jul 2026Updated 06:25, 06 Jul 2026It was a seething, hostile cauldron of noise. I’ve never heard anything like it inside a football ground before. The Azteca stadium is one of most iconic venues in world football. It felt like the Three Lions were entering the Colosseum in Roman times. It had a raw ferocity to it. The huge Mexican crowd booed every single England players touch and greeted their own with chants of “Ole Ole Ole”. It was truly a gladiatorial contest. I can’t recall ever attending a match with such consistent loud noise and chanting throughout the full 90 minutes (and 11 minutes added on!)'England fans were brilliant'There was a thunderous atmosphere which was fueled by a lengthy one hour thunderstorm delay and fuelled by tens of thousands of pints extra pints being drank. The England fans were simply brilliant. Despite being vastly outnumbered, they tried to make themselves heard over the wall of noise. At one stage the strains of “Football’s Coming Home” and “God Save the King” could be heard over the Mexican support.Top of the PopsIt was a brave battlecry from the men and women in white. At the end Robbie Williams joined Oasis as the song of choice. Angels was bellowed out after Wonderwall had finished. Many Mexican fans stayed to applaud their own team and some joined in.What was particularly noticeable was everyone was wearing a Mexican shirt or an England shirt. I didn’t see a single club jersey. At the previous games in the United States, there were hundreds of Arsenal, Man United, Man City shirts. Not here. It was like club colours had been unofficially banned.Mexican raveOther things that stood out was the speed of the Mexican ballboys - never have I seen match balls thrown into play so quickly as when they chased an equaliser. And the press box was situated next to the Mexican fans. We were showered in beer when they scored their first goal.In my four days in Mexico, I was met with warmth and friendliness. And the woman who roundly booed the England team outside their hotel and then turned around and offered me a shot of tequila. That seemed to sum Mexico up.'The stadium was unbelievable'England fans have spoken of the “unbelievable” experience inside the Estadio Azteca for England’s 3-2 win against Mexico. Liam Pearce, 29, from Wiltshire, said: "Oh it was good. The stadium was unbelievable."We sat amongst the Mexicans which was a bit terrifying to start with, but as soon as that first goal went in it was fine. But yes, onto Miami against Norway. The performances aren’t great but the best teams never play well throughout the tournament, so we’ll see."England v Mexico highlightsJude Bellingham and Harry Kane carried England to the World Cup quarter finals, overcoming the raucous crowd, the elevation of Estadio Azteca and a man disadvantage in the second half to beat Mexico.Bellingham scored two goals 98 seconds apart in the first half, and six minutes after Jarell Quansah was sent off, Kane converted a penalty to restore England's two-goal lead. England will face Norway on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida, for a spot in the semi finals.Speaking after the contest, Kane said: “It was a crazy game. We had to fight. I can't really talk, but the occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way." Bellingham stunned the crowd of 80,824 at a venue where Mexico was unbeaten in 10 World Cup matches, including three this year, when he scored on a header in the 36th minute and again in the 38th on a pass from Kane.England and Mexico fans react to result in Mexico City Julián Quiñones scored for El Tri in the 42nd minute, and the game appeared to turn in Mexico’s favor when Quansah was shown a red card in the 54th for a dangerous foul on Jesús Gallardo. But England were awarded a penalty for a challenge by Mexico goalkeeper Raúl Rangel, and Kane converted for his sixth goal of this tournament and 14th of his World Cup career, matching Gerd Müller of West Germany for fifth on the scoring list. Kane has six goals in this tournament, one behind Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race.Article continues belowKane then committed a foul that made him the first player since at least 1966 to score and concede a penalty in a World Cup game. Raúl Jiménez converted the kick with a stutter-step approach to move El Tri within 3-2. Mexico attacked relentlessly over the final 21 minutes, plus 11 minutes of stoppage time, but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and England's defenders held steady.
