The British Armed Forces are establishing a new operational group that will be responsible for the development and deployment of drones.
This was reported by The Telegraph, according to Ukrinform.
As noted, the plan calls for an investment of 5 billion pounds to expand the use of drones and autonomous weapon systems to counter the threat from Russia. The new unit is being modeled after Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, which have become a separate branch of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The British task force is not expected to be a separate branch of the military. It will consist of personnel from the Army, the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force, and the Royal Marines under the command of a senior officer. As stated in the DIP, the unit’s main task will be “to bring together people, data, and machines to solve real operational challenges quickly, at scale, and cost-effectively.”
A source in the defense ministry added: “Many of the decisions in the DIP were undoubtedly based on lessons learned from how Ukraine is fighting the Russians.”
