Naomi Osaka produced one of the biggest upsets of this year’s Wimbledon Championships on Sunday, defeating world number one Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6 (7/2) to reach the quarter-finals at the All England Club for the first time in her career.

The Japanese star avenged her straight-sets defeat to Sabalenka in the fourth round of the French Open in June with a commanding display on Centre Court.

The victory also marks Osaka’s first Wimbledon quarter-final appearance and continues her impressive resurgence under coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, the former mentor of Iga Swiatek.

The four-time Grand Slam champion has now won all four of her matches at this year’s tournament without dropping a set.

Seeded 14th, Osaka has shown increasing confidence on grass, a surface that has traditionally been her least successful.
