Kashmiris in London protest Pakistan's crackdown in PoKOverseas Kashmiris held a "massive gathering" in London on Sunday to protest a sweeping crackdown by the Pakistani government in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK). In a post on X, the Awami Action Committee said a large number of overseas Kashmiris took part in the demonstration in London, sharing images of the event with the caption: "A massive gathering of overseas Kashmiris in London."The demonstration focused on the arrest of more than 600 civil rights activists following a wave of anti-Islamabad protests that recently took place across the region.Meanwhile, tensions in the region escalated on Sunday after one person was killed and several others were injured when Pakistan Rangers opened fire on protesters, according to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK) unit.In a series of posts on X, the PTI's PoK unit said demonstrations were continuing across the region in support of demands for basic rights and in solidarity with an ongoing sit-in in Rawalakot."Protests continue across the state in solidarity with the provision of basic rights and the Dharna in Dereh (Rawalakot). Hundreds of people, including women, participate in the protest in Charhoi," the party said in one of its posts. In another post on X, the PTI alleged that Pakistan Police and Rangers used force against demonstrators in Amb village, located in the Dadyal tehsil of Mirpur district in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK).The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), the group that called Sunday's protest, also said tensions had escalated across the region. It alleged that one person was killed and several others were injured after Pakistani security forces opened fire and used shelling against protesters. The committee also alleged that Pakistani security forces opened fire and shelled the area to disperse what it described as a peaceful demonstration, leaving several people critically injured. The JAAC said protest caravans continued to arrive at the sit-in site in Rawalakot, while demonstrations were also held in several other parts of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK). It added that members of the Kashmiri diaspora staged protests in Auckland, New Zealand, calling for the release of detained activists.Activists alleged that Pakistani security forces were using drones to monitor sit-in protests, prompting local leaders to call for a boycott of the local elections scheduled for July 27.The committee has appealed for peaceful demonstrations across Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK), urging participants to carry white flags while demanding fundamental rights and maintaining peace.Separately, PoK activist Amjad Ayub Mirza claimed that more than 600 JAAC members and activists had been detained following the arrest of Shaukat Nawaz Mir. He also said protests against Pakistan's actions were being organised both in PoK and among the Kashmiri diaspora abroad, as cited by ANI. Meanwhile, rights group Amnesty International condemned what it described as Pakistan's crackdown ahead of the upcoming regional elections.Amnesty accused the authorities of using force to suppress peaceful political dissent and violate fundamental rights, while also criticising the decision to designate the Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) as a "proscribed organisation."The organisation said the ban on the civil rights coalition was a disproportionate restriction on the rights to freedom of association and peaceful political activity.
